My Groom Speech - How I Started
By TheWeddingPlanner on Nov 26, 2009 in Wedding
I always knew that when my fiancé and I decided to get married I would have to write a groom wedding speech, but I never knew how important that speech was going to be! The truth is that I left it for weeks and weeks before I even realised that I was going to have to get down to it and actually write the thing.
My advice about that? Don’t do what I did and make the same mistakes. Give yourself plenty of time and don’t sweat it!
When you first start thinking about your groom speech it can seem like a really challenging task. There are so many other wedding issues to deal with, like the ceremony and vows that it is difficult to find the time to write an effective wedding speech let alone consider standing up in front of a audience and giving the performance of your life! As my wedding date got nearer and nearer, I considered all the angles for a funny, motivational and charming groom speech but it just wasn’t happening. Eventually, I realised I should start jotting down notes as thoughts came to me.
I now know there are better ways to write a better groom speech or groom toasts but this was at least a start.
It was then that I began to consider other solutions like speech guides and prompts to structure the speech as a story, jotting down information on me and my bride. Where we met, how long we’ve been together, some of our most memorable moments – things like that. It really helped me to put into words the story of our relationship and what we’ve been through to get where we are now.
If I gave you some advice at this stage it would be not to worry too much about the content of your groom speech, especially groom speech jokes. The best thing to do is make a start, any kind of start well in advance of the wedding. Just begin with the notes and you will soon find yourself on the path to the perfect groom speech.
